THE beautiful island of Taveuni in Fiji lies in the lush northern region.

Though uncommercialised, there are a number of excellent Taveuni hotels and resorts as well as budget accommodation providers. The island airstrip is located at Matei, with flights arriving and departing daily conveying guests and other passengers to and from the mainland. Somosomo is the main village; it is called a chiefly village as this is where the regional chief resides.
A sealed coastal road goes between Matei and Wairiki (just past Waiyevo). The road is then unsealed but scenic right to Vuna and around the southern end of Taveuni to the small village of Salialevu. An unsealed road also goes between the boundary of Matei right round to the island's famous Lavena Beach. There are many waterfalls on this side of the island.
The nearby islands of Qamea, Matangi and Laucala all offer excellent resort accommodation.
